How to "Blow the Whistle"

How you can "Blow the Whistle" on this activity.

Step One... COLLECT INFORMATION

1) Be SURE of your allegations, double check your sources. HERESAY (where you heard of it from someone else, second hand) is NOT a good foundation.

2) Check out their website.
Their website can be a great source of information where the teacher can "hang themself" with their information that is self-incriminating!

You must COLLECT their self-incriminating evidence...
a) Make screen prints of their pages. Date them.
b) Identify students from the teacher's home school district that are on these pages.
c) Be SURE to get screen prints of photos with a uniform showing.
d) Look for and be sure to screen print wording that says "I'm a teacher at ______
school and ....... " or even just "I am a teacher...."

3) Checkout any Blog, Facebook and Twitter pages.
Look for the same information. Is best to make screen prints of all their pages.
BE SURE they are dated.
Again, look for photos of Students OR their Families!
ID the ones that you can. If possible, supply phone numbers or even addresses.

4) Check out their on-line sales site where they post the proofs. Again, screen prints are great. Often the event or family names will be supplied.

5) Collect copies of Advertizing they do, especially in school newspapers, sports programs, etc that is targeted to students or student aged organizations.

6) Any photos with their logo on it. Go ahead, make a copy for evidence purposes only. Again, ID who it is and that they are students or parents of students in the district.

7) Sports groups or teams. Be sure of your facts as to when the photos were taken, what the team(s) were, were most the members from the school district? Verify the info with a coach, parents, or the director.

Remember, teachers CAN take photos of students in other school districts. They CAN take photos and GIVE them away. They CAN take photos for the yearbook or newspaper as part of their duties or as a volunteer.  They CANNOT take photos and sell them for personal gain!

Step Two.. Got your evidence together??? Now here is what to do.

1) Call: Beth Myers (515) 242-6506 Attorney for the
Iowa Board of Educational Examiners (BOEE) Grimes State Office Building
400 E. 14th St Des Moines, IA 50319-0147 (515) 281-5849
If you want to email her, beth.myers@iowa.gov  I would state simply “I have a teacher selling to students, and I need to talk to you.” The phone call is where you will get the most information.

The BOEE is the State organization that licenses, regulates, and can even revoke a teachers and/or administrator’s license. Ms. Myers is the investigating attorney. I feel it important to call her to let her be personally aware of the problem. Time permitting, she will do a very good job of explaining the ramifications and procedure of the law to you. She might ask that you talk to the school administration to resolve your concern. Telling them you talked to Ms. Myers will give you a lot of instant credibility.

2) Call Chris Brinkopf, Executive Director of the PPI 563-578-1126 and let her know what’s going on. ppichris@iowatelecom.net

3) If you want, call me (George Ensley) at 515-432-8292. I’ve been working on this for over a year and have heard all sorts of flimsy reasoning ands excuses. I feel very strongly about this issue. Your thoughts on this blog are welcomed!

When it comes to Teachers Selling to Students we are like policemen.
You CAN go 100 mph down the interstate…. until you are caught… by a policeman!
Teachers CAN sell to students…. until they are caught …. by you, the “policeman”.

Based on my personal experiences, I have to guess about 1/6th of us have a “problem”.
If we don’t take care of ourselves, NOBODY else will.
WE have the LAW on our side…. USE IT!!!
